VoiceXML Users Group Meeting Questionnaire

Instructions: This questionnaire should take 10 minutes or less to complete. Your answers will give us a better understanding of the types of activites that you, the user, would like to see at our next Users Group Meeting in NYC October 2003. The questionnaire is completely anonymous and we would request that each individual submit the completed survey only once.

Fall 2003 Users Group Meeting Activities Survey

The Forum Users Group Meetings provide users with an environment focused on nurturing and increasing the technical knowledgebase within the VoiceXML community. This is a task the VoiceXML Forum takes very seriously. To that end, the Forums Education Committee would like your help in planning the Fall 2003 Users Group Meeting.

1. Host a "design workshop" The VoiceXML Forum's Voice Application DesignFest:
Participants are organized into teams, and assigned a real-world voice application concept. Team members work together to design an effective voice interface, summarizing their final designs in poster format displayed in a common area. The VoiceXML Designfest concludes with a panel discussion with a team leader from each team presenting their team's approach to the problem. This is an opportunity to work side-by-side and learn/share with your peers from other companies, as well as a great opportunity to interact with well-known VoiceXML technologists who created the technology.

2. "How to implement great mixed-initiative dialogs" discussion/workshop:
Workshop on Implementing Mixed-Initiative Dialogs in VoiceXML Learn and share best practices in developing mixed-initiative dialogs. This is an opportunity to discover and explore what works and what doesn't with this powerful feature offered by the VoiceXML language.

3. "VoiceXML 3.0 Wishlist" Workshop:
Link up with key technologists from the W3C Voice Browser Working Group and share your perspective on what features you'd like to see in VoiceXML 3.0. You will submit your ideas in advance and they will be organized by workshop leaders and discussed by participants in priority order.

4. "How to meter VoiceXML applications to measure usability" discussion/workshop:
Quantifying Usability of Voice Applications Workshop Can we objectively measure the usability of voice applications? What techniques work best? Are there pitfalls to avoid? Come and share your approach to this problem, and/or learn from others.

5. VoiceXML Technology Fair:
Present your VoiceXML products and/or prototypes live at the VoiceXML Forum's Technology Fair. Each participant will be presented with a booth at which they can meet UGM attendees and present their technology demonstrations. The top 5 demos (determined by a panel of independent judges) will be given an opportunity to present their demonstrations on stage during the UGM's Technology Demonstration Session.

6. "Multimodal Best Practice User Design" Brainstorm Session:
Join forces with other multimodal pioneers, and help enumerate and identify best practices in designing multimodal user interfaces. The issue is what guidelines and heuristics to use to design multimodal applications. The end result of this sesssion will form a "Multimodal User Interface Guidelines Manifesto" that will be made available to the general public on the Forum's website.

7. Total Emersion (Hands On!) VoiceXML / XHTML+Voice Tutorial:
This fast-paced, hands-on tutorial is designed to provide you with an in-depth introduction to designing voice-only applications in VoiceXML, as well as exposure to VoiceXML's role in the XHTML+Voice multimodal markup specification. Workshops could include how to write grammars, how to write mixed initiative applications, how to write VoiceXML applications for use by both novice and expert users, how to use X+V, etc.

8. Case studies panel
Invite developers of widely used VoiceXML applications to describe their experiences constructing and deploying the applications. Discuss the problems overcome to create the application, what the user likes and dislikes about the applicatdion, what changes should be made to the application.

9. Tell us what other activities you would like to see at the next Users Group Meeting:
