I am an old brick and morter developer. I come from the Telephony end of the business and have been developing IVR for the last 10 years. I've been developing in Visual Basic using Intel's CTADE. I was the main developer in a small company developing the main application, designing the SQL Server database and then I would have a Web developer supply a Web interface for Admin and simple user tools.

I am trying to figure out the best way to re-invent myself. Do I stay with Microsoft and use .Net; goto Java; or use a shrink wrapped Development tool. My strengths are Telephony; Visual Basic and SQL Server Development.

Any suggestions other than find another occupation?

Robert:

Learning more about VoiceXML and related specifications (collectively referred to as the "Speech Interface Framework" or SIF) is a great way to reinvent yourself.

If you want my two cents, here is what I would suggest. First, if you want a better sense of where VoiceXML and the SIF specs fit into the bigger picture of telephony applicaiton development, check out this page on the Voxeo site -- http://www.voxeo.com/library/xml-vs-api.jsp.

If you want to get your feet wet with some web development tutorials, check out the w3schools site at http://www.w3schools.com/. Many of the principles and concepts of traditional web application development apply to VoiceXML application devleopment. Being well versed in these concepts will go a long way regardless of which underlying technology you decide to use (.NET, Java, LAMP etc.). You can find some basic information to get you started with VoiceXML on my site at http://www.voiceingov.org/blog/?page_id=5.

Finally, if you prefer to use an IDE for your development work and you want to see a list of tools for devleoping VoiceXML, check out http://www.kenrehor.com/voicexml/#tools.

Hope this helps.
