Dear
Readers,
October
23, 2001 was a historical day for the VoiceXML community,
as the W3C released the first public working draft of
VoiceXML 2.0. You can access a copy of the 2.0 specification
and MOU signed by W3C and the VoiceXML Forum at http://www.w3c.org/voice.
In December we will deviate from our previously published
editorial calendar, to publish a special issue on "what's
new in 2.0" with articles written by key contributors
from the Voice Browser Working Group.
Now
that the 2.0 specification has been made public, the
conformance-related activities that has been taking
shape within the VoiceXML Forum's Conformance Program
really become critical. This month, Ken
Rehor (chairman of the Forum's Conformance Committee)
and Gerald
Karam author our feature article entitled, Building
the VoiceXML Forum Certification Program. The article
provides an overview of what the conformance program
entails, who is involved, and the steps vendors will
follow in order to certify their product conforms to
the VoiceXML specifications.
In
the Speak
& Listen column this month, Jeff
Kunins addresses a question on conformance. In addition,
Jeff responds in detail to your questions on how VoiceXML
interacts with HTTP, cookies, caching and more. Send
your VoiceXML 2.0 questions to our resident expert:
speak.and.listen@voicexmlreview.org.
In
the First
Words column Rob
Marchand provides a comprehensive treatment of the
VoiceXML <record> tag. The article covers new
features for <record> in VoiceXML 2.0 and gives
code examples illustrating both the server and client
side aspects of recording audio in VoiceXML applications.
Sincerely,
Jonathan
Engelsma
