Speech Applications Grammar Developer / Analyst

Location: Midwestern US (Position AXG-996)

JOB DESCRIPTION:
Responsible for designing, developing, implementing and tuning speech grammars and applications ensuring consistency and quality of code. Additional responsibilities include:

- Provide consultative advice to customers and company staff on advanced speech recognition functions/capabilities, dialog design, features and toolsets

- Hands-on coding, tuning and diagnosis of speech applications, with proficiency coding in Grammar XML (GRXML), Grammar Specification Language (GSL) and VXML. (CCXML, Java, TCL, Perl and Visio expertise also desirable)

- Prepare a variety of reports relating to performance of speech applications, ensuring they are created and distributed in a timely manner

- Oversee speech application activities, ensuring functionality and usability of code exceeds the needs of the customer by continuously reviewing the effectiveness of current procedures and striving to identify improvements to the process

- Oversee research and direct the investigation of customer issues with appropriate staff to bring issues to a resolution

- Coordinate, prioritize, and participate in activities associated with completing assigned speech projects or project task(s), following through with customers from initial requirements gathering to application deployments, testing/tuning and optimizing recognition rates, caller satisfactions levels and overall system performance

Major Job Accountabilities:

Voice Engineering Functions

- Design, develop, implement and tune grammars for speech recognition applications ensuring consistency and quality
- Conduct speech recognition application related studies (e.g., confidence rejection threshold testing, alternate phonetic pronunciation, language model weighting variance testing, speech engine parameter setting, speech grammar optimization, etc.) while adhering to department policies and procedures
- Provide consultative advice to clients and staff on advanced speech recognition and speaker authentication functions which may include trends in technical capabilities, ability to integrate programs, and available speech features
- Prepare a variety of reports relating to performance of speech applications, ensuring they are created and distributed in a timely manner
- Oversee analysis of voice recognition programs and make recommendations to ensure client objectives are met and speech applications perform at optimal efficiency and effectiveness
- Act as liaison between internal and external technical departments, client, and assigned client representative, as necessary
- Ensure timely communication to clients on programming timeframes; keep up-to-date on industry trends and methodologies, assist in the evaluation plan and implementation of new technology which will advance efficiency and effectiveness of speech services provided
- Continuously educate internal staff on natural language processing and speech recognition technology

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE:

Minimum three years software engineering experience with speech recognition applications required

Minimum one year experience in GSL, VXML, GRXML required. Experience in CCXML, JAVA, and TCL is desirable.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

- General knowledge of industry-standard best practices for dialog voice user interface design is very helpful
- Knowledge of speech recognition, speaker authentication, and text-to-speech technology
- Project planning, estimating and scheduling methods
- Speech recognition application design, development, and deployment best practices

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
Bachelor's degree in computer science, computer engineering, linguistics, symbolic systems, business administration, or related field required. Master's degree preferred. Equivalent work experience in a similar position may be substituted for educational requirements.
