My company has an IVR and I want to become a developer. We use Audium. Where do I start? Should I learn VXML first? Is also knowing XML necessary?

You should spend some time up front getting acquainted with VoiceXML. Since VoiceXML is an XML language, you will also need to learn the basics of XML.
You will also find a large number of gentle introductory articles written by Rob Marchand in the First Words column of the VoiceXML Review e-zine. http://www.voicexmlreview.org
